Project Summary:
This timber frame home we designed for our clients in Rapid City, South Dakota, is part of an exciting mixed-use development for the Rushmore Music Festival — a three-week summer program attracting talented young musicians from all over the U.S. This modified Thielsen will serve as a full-time residence for our clients and a gathering space for faculty and students during the summer season. The main level features a wide-open living, kitchen, and dining area that will act as a dining hall and a performance space. Down the hall, our clients and faculty members can take advantage of a large primary bedroom with an en-suite bathroom and a walk-in closet, an additional bedroom, a laundry room, and a half bathroom in the foyer.
Upstairs, you’ll find a shared gathering area that opens to the great room below. There are also two additional bedrooms, an office, and a full bathroom. Once finished, the main house will connect with two massive A-frame cabins where students will reside during their stay. The property will also feature several small, cabin-like structures designed to serve as practice, rehearsal, and teaching spaces. Custom Features:
Our designers made several modifications to our standard Thielsen to accommodate the needs of our clients and visiting faculty and students. For instance, we removed the two-car garage from the design and reconfigured the upstairs living space to create one long, gable-roofed structure that connects to A-frame cabins via covered walkways. We also expanded the downstairs living quarters to include an additional bedroom by removing the patio area outside the primary bedroom. Additionally, our clients decided to add a heavy timber entry shed roof that gives the structure a ranch-style appearance.
