Foundation Options
Crawl space foundations are common in warmer climates and consist of short concrete walls—typically around four feet tall—set on concrete footers. While similar to stem wall foundations, they differ in that the top layer uses wooden floor joists instead of a concrete slab, offering an elevated design with easier access to plumbing and wiring.
Also known as a walk-out basement, this foundation is dug eight feet or more into the ground and anchored with footings below the frost line. Featuring one or more exterior walls with windows or doors, it’s ideal for sloped lots, allowing natural light and scenic views to enhance the lower level of the home.
Stem wall foundations are constructed by pouring concrete in stages—starting with a footer, then stacking cement blocks to form the perimeter wall before adding the final concrete slab. Common in flood-prone or uneven areas, this elevated foundation allows easy access to plumbing and electrical systems while maintaining durability and structural integrity.
Monolithic slab, or slab-on-grade, foundations are the standard choice for our pre-engineered building kits thanks to their simplicity, affordability, and strength. Created by pouring concrete all at once—with thicker edges to support structural walls—this foundation type offers excellent durability, energy efficiency, and low maintenance.
Framing Options
Post and beam construction joins heavy timbers with metal connectors to create a strong, open-frame structure that showcases exposed wood and high ceilings. This method eliminates the need for load-bearing walls, allowing for wide-open interiors and greater flexibility in design.
Clear span construction uses parallel chord trusses to create wide-open, self-supporting interiors free of posts or beams. While our Stillwater Barn Home and Union Event Barn Kits showcase this method, any of our kits can be customized into a clear span structure to fit a client’s vision.
Post-frame construction, also known as pole barn construction, uses large pressure-treated wood posts set in concrete to form a strong structural frame capable of supporting heavy loads over wide spacing. When combined with clear-span trusses, this method provides an ideal framework for spacious, low-rise buildings like warehouses, agricultural facilities, and covered riding arenas.
Hybrid framing blends conventional framing with timber framing or post and beam construction to achieve the aesthetic and strength of traditional timber design at a lower price point. This approach is ideal for cutting costs in less visible areas while maintaining open, striking interiors in primary living spaces.
Cross-laminated timbers are multi-layer mass timber panels made by gluing together alternating layers of board lumber for superior strength, insulation, and airtightness. Comparable to steel and concrete but lighter and more sustainable, CLT offers faster installation and a lower carbon footprint, making it a leading material in modern mass timber construction.
Timber framing uses large, heavy timbers connected with traditional joinery like mortise and tenon instead of metal fasteners, resulting in a highly crafted, durable structure. Though more expensive due to the precision required, modern designs often blend timber framing with conventional methods to capture its classic look at a lower cost.
Also known as light-frame construction, conventional framing uses dimensional or engineered lumber nailed together to form cost-effective, durable wall structures. While it relies on load-bearing walls that limit open layouts, combining it with timber framing or post and beam methods allows for spacious designs in key areas without driving up costs.
Structural insulated panels feature an insulating foam core sandwiched between two structural boards, creating a highly energy-efficient and airtight envelope. Available in polyurethane or expanded polystyrene (EPS), SIPs help meet modern building codes while balancing cost, insulation performance, and moisture resistance.
Exterior Accents Options

Designed to cover the underside of roof overhangs, our tongue and groove soffits provide a clean, seamless finish while improving ventilation and moisture protection. Made from premium Douglas fir or Western red cedar, they deliver a timeless, high-quality look for any structure.

Whether structural for added stability or decorative for visual appeal, our knee braces are crafted from select grade Douglas fir and feature traditional mortise and tenon joinery.
Corbels are decorative supports that extend from an exterior wall to uphold a truss or beam above. Made from select grade Douglas fir with mortise and tenon connections, our corbels are available in two sizes: a 2’ version with a 6” x 6” top cord and a 4’ upgrade with an 8” x 8” top cord—each adding character and craftsmanship to your structure.
Vented Hardie Soffit PanelsHardie soffit panels are available in both vented and non-vented profiles, allowing clients to balance style and function. The vented option promotes better airflow, pest protection, and energy efficiency by regulating attic temperature, ultimately helping reduce heating and cooling costs.
Non-Vented Hardie Soffit PanelsCrafted from durable fiber cement engineered to resist warping, rotting, and moisture, Hardie soffit panels offer long-lasting protection for roof eaves and porch ceilings. With finishes that mimic natural wood, they combine rustic beauty with low-maintenance performance.
