Project Summary:
Animal lovers — this one is for you! Located in Sonoma, California, this rustic post and beam structure we built from a Columbia Gable Barn Kit serves as the brand-new office and venue for the incredible Charlie’s Acres farm animal sanctuary. Charlie’s Acres is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing farm animals and showing people the beauty and intelligence of these adorable creatures with the mission of inspiring others to adopt a plant-based diet. With their exciting new venue, their team can now host educational events and corporate retreats from inside a beautiful heavy timber space.
This quaint structure features 3,360 square feet of conditioned living space, including a large multi-purpose room, a shared office, a private office, a storage area, and ADA restrooms. A 40′ x 12′ covered patio outside the main entrance gives this building a distinct ranch-style appearance, with stained cedar board and batten siding adding a reclaimed feel to the structure. We also incorporated two covered patios with gable deck covers as part of the north and south entryways and extended our standard Columbia 72′ to fit a 40′ x 96′ footprint. Select grade Douglas fir tongue and groove wall and ceiling material, faux glulam trusses with posts and knife plates, and Andersen 100 Series windows with colonial grids add elegance to the multi-purpose venue area. Other unique features include a Pella® Reserve™ commercial door package and WUI High Fire upgrades like WUI-approved vents and Fire-X™ plywood on the gable ends.

Custom Features:
We made several adjustments to our base Columbia design to achieve this ranch-style structure’s distinct look and layout. For example, we extended its size to fit a 40′ x 96′ footprint, with room for a multi-purpose area, multiple offices, storage, and restrooms. We also added gable deck covers to the front and sides of the structure. The exterior features stained cedar board and batten siding, with Pella® Reserve™ commercial doors leading into the venue. Inside, you’ll find floor-to-ceiling tongue and groove wall coverings, faux glulam trusses with posts and knife plates, and Andersen 100 Series windows with colonial grids in the main hall.
