5 Interiors We Can’t Get Enough Of

Love is in the air this week — and what better way to celebrate it than by highlighting interiors we love from past projects! In honor of Valentine’s Day, we’re rounding up a few of our favorite living spaces, wineries, and wedding barns that give us all the warm fuzzy feelings.

Here are some unique spaces that we will forever adore as part of our project portfolio:

Anchored Roots Winery

Located in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin, this adorable barn-style winery sits just a few miles from the bay. Designed with knotty wood ceilings, faux timber beams and trusses, and beautiful picture windows, this tasting room offers a cozy and casual setting perfect for weekend wine tastings and friendly get-togethers.

Serendipity Farm & Vine

Originally built as a horse barn with living quarters, the Serendipity Farm & Vine venue features one of the most unique and enchanting interiors we’ve seen of any building. Converted horse stalls in the tasting room contribute to its extraordinary appeal, while wood accents give it that essential warmth and rustic feeling.

Storm King Mountain Ranch Venue

One of our favorite venues and projects of all time, the Storm King Mountain Ranch venue showcases the timeless allure of heavy timber craftsmanship from top to bottom. We designed this structure using traditional timber framing, as seen in the main hall, covered patio, and entrance. As part of their design, the team at Storm King also elected to add antique wood siding and ceilings to their wedding barn, blending past and present styles to create its truly exceptional interior.

High Desert Barn Home

Lastly, this charming barn home in Bend, Oregon, is a classic project of ours — and one we will always cherish as one of our first barn home builds. Stunning tongue and groove ceilings and large picture windows take center stage in the living space, adding an air of sophistication and comfort to the home. Downstairs, our clients can take full advantage of a spacious RV garage, allowing them to easily hop on the road and embark on any adventure their heart desires.

The 7 Essentials of Farmhouse Design

Farmhouse design is a timeless aesthetic defined by its large open floor plans, wraparound porches, and rustic exposed wood members. This design style focuses on functionality and simplicity above everything else, making it the perfect solution for those seeking an interior that grows in value and popularity with age. Whether you’re planning to redesign your living space or build a custom farmhouse from the ground up, there are plenty of ways to bring the charm and beauty of modern farmhouse living into your home. With so much to think about, let our team help guide you in the right direction with these seven essentials for farmhouse design:

Reclaimed Materials

When designing your dream farmhouse, using reclaimed materials is a must! Reclaimed materials can be wood, steel, wool, or any type of material that has been used previously and is re-used in its original condition. Wood is perhaps the most commonly used reclaimed material in farmhouse-style homes. You can find reclaimed wood on the side of a barn or vintage support beams salvaged from an abandoned building. Additionally, you can always create an accent wall with reclaimed wood paneling for an added rustic touch.

Neutral Color Schemes

When it comes time to choose your paint and color scheme, neutral tones tend to be a natural choice because they help make rooms appear larger and brighter. Colors such as off-white, grey, beige, or light blue make the perfect backdrop for a contemporary farmhouse. With a neutral color scheme, you can create an inviting environment for all your guests.

Minimalism

While the traditional farmhouse is still adored, modern farmhouse style has steadily been gaining traction. Minimalism, known for its clean lines and simplicity, works to create a modern and uncluttered feel. When minimalism is combined with rustic accents, it can bring out the ultimate cozy vibes for your space. If you’re looking for ways to highlight the bare essentials of your home, here’s a great resource for incorporating minimalist features into your farmhouse interior.

Natural Fibers

Natural fibers are a wonderful way to add color and texture to your farmhouse. Cowhide, jute, and hemp make fantastic materials for rugs to pad your beautiful hardwood floors, while wool and organic cotton make warm, comfy blankets for chilly winter nights. Considering natural fibers are sustainable and renewable, these materials offer a healthy choice for you and your home!

Natural Light

Since many farmhouses were built before the days of electricity, using natural light was essential. Even once homes were wired for electricity, the use of natural light was still a popular option because it helped cut utility costs Large picture windows and skylights will bring in the warm glow of the sun, working to create an airy and bright atmosphere. Additionally, adding a windowed or vented cupola to your design helps ventilate your interior and enhance the natural lighting of your space!

Exposed Wood Beams

Another way to incorporate reclaimed materials into your farmhouse would be to use reclaimed wood to create exposed beams throughout your home. Exposed beams can be structural or decorative — the choice is up to you and your design team! Keep in mind that exposed wood beams are certainly a must-have when it comes to designing your dream home.

Wraparound Porches

One last, and possibly most important, essential of farmhouse design is the inclusion of a wraparound porch or veranda. A wraparound patio provides the ideal place to enjoy summer sunsets and even snowy winter nights by your gas-burning fire pit, giving you a year-round place to relax in and soak up the beauty of the great outdoors.

We’ve covered everything from reclaimed materials to minimalism and natural fibers. There is so much you can do to make your farmhouse feel like home, but with these seven design essentials, you’ll be living your farmhouse dream in no time!

Designing a Contemporary Rustic Space

If you frequent Pinterest, chances are high you’ve come across a number of boards dedicated to farmhouse décor and timber frame interiors. Best described as contemporary rustic, this design style is one of the biggest interior design trends to explode in the last decade as part of a growing obsession with barn-style residences. While rustic is a broad term that encompasses many different design styles, the idea behind contemporary rustic design is to integrate nature-inspired elements in modern spaces to create a warm and welcoming environment. This can be anything from adding a stone fireplace to your living space to simply investing in rustic wood furniture. If you’re seeking contemporary rustic inspiration for your barn home, here are some ways you can pull off Pinterest-worthy interiors that evoke a sense of countryside bliss.

Make Your Home Feel Like a Renovated Barn with Repurposed Wood

As sustainable design becomes more of a necessity than a luxury, more people are incorporating repurposed materials in their home in an attempt to curb their carbon footprint and minimize waste. While this can take the form of anything from reclaimed stained glass to antique brick, one of the best and most popular materials that our clients choose to include in their barn home design is repurposed wood. Aside from being an eco-friendly building material, reclaimed wood is beloved by a majority of Americans because it brings a sense of history and natural beauty to any modern living space. Although there’s no limit to what you can do with reclaimed wood in your barn home, our clients typically use this material for accent walls in their living areas or as barn-style doors, cabinets, and shelves. When paired with modern light fixtures and neutral color schemes, reclaimed wood accents make unforgettable focal points that are certain to make your home feel cozy and luxurious.

Use Natural or Neutral Color Schemes

When planning the design of your barn, it’s important to think about what will best complement the heavy timbers in your living space. One of the easiest ways to highlight the beauty of these exposed beams is by using a natural or neutral color scheme throughout the interior. Many of our clients achieve this effect by using an off-white, cream-colored paint, but you can also use warm browns, greens, or grays. Essentially, a warm color scheme that looks and feels earthy is a perfect addition to any rustic-inspired space.

Style Your Walls with Shiplap Siding

Traditionally used as exterior siding, shiplap siding is a style of wood siding made from long planks that are horizontally mounted with small gaps between them. In recent years, shiplap siding has been appearing in more and more homes across the country, with millions of homeowners using this type of wood siding as beautiful wall accents in their living areas. Though the most popular form of utilizing shiplap siding as a wall accent is to paint it white for a beachy coastal look, many clients like to use barnwood-style shiplap siding to complement their exposed beam ceilings. This stylish wall accent adds a rustic, yet elegant touch to our barn homes and makes for an eye-catching design element in any living area.

Add Animal Decor for an Outdoorsy Effect

Contemporary rustic design is all about bringing elements from the outside and incorporating them into modern interiors, whether that be rustic wood accents, plants, or even animal décor. One of the biggest trends that we’ve seen in a number of our clients’ homes is the use of custom chandeliers made from deer antlers. This feature makes a wonderful centerpiece in living and dining rooms, while also drawing attention to the gorgeous heavy timber beams in our barn homes. Some of our clients have also incorporated antler wall accents and tasteful taxidermy in their homes to accentuate the natural look of their space. Depending on your vision, you have the option of using faux antler chandeliers and animal-inspired design elements to achieve this same effect in your home.
